All states are a blessing for some and a terror for others, in some form or another, would it be towards another state or the human rights, the human nature being imperfect, thus the countries reflect therefore the work-in progress of human cultural and spiritual development. The USA has its own history of dealing with the human and civil rights issues, for example, "although African Americans were observant about white Americans and conscious of racial discrimination, white Americans did not think much about African Americans, nor about the effects of racial discrimination."*1 Then there are Native Americans and other countries and minorities who have suffered grave consequences as a result of the prevailing attitudes and ill conceived policies of the day. As far as the USS Liberty is concerned, that was a military incident during the Six-Day War, since then, "Israel apologized for the attack, saying that the USS Liberty had been attacked in error after being mistaken for an Egyptian ship. Both the Israeli and U.S. governments conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the ship's identity, though others, including survivors of the attack, have rejected these conclusions and maintain that the attack was deliberate. In May 1968, the Israeli government paid US$3,323,500 (US$22.6 million 2016) in compensation to the families of the 34 men killed in the attack. In March 1969, Israel paid a further $3,566,457 to the men who had been wounded. On 18 December 1980, it agreed to pay $6 million as settlement for the final U.S. bill of $17,132,709 for material damage to Liberty herself plus 13 years' interest."*2 The state of Israel and the USA are close allies for more than one reason, and Israel would not even exist if not for the US support. The geopolitics of the modern day is beyond the nation states and is more about multinational corporate power consolidating its grip over the nations and its citizenry. To think that the world politics and economy of today is still a matter of national nature is naive view that is missing the big picture perspective. All states are guilty of some crimes and mistakes made, arguably there are no perfect states, however, that is not to say that all states are evil and have no right to exist, for many wars were fought for such a privilege. ____________________________________ *2 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident *1 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privilege_(social_inequality)
