X & Y Well, just finished my Shabbat celebrations at the shul. Shabbat Shalom. At the end, when almost all were gone, i got into a polite little argument with the Rabbi over the definition of God. Although there were some interested in what i had to say about it, the Rabbi did not like any of it, he felt threatened about his core beliefs to such an extent that he almost threw me out, since apparently he was very irritated by my God of Hosts argument vs his ineffable unthinkable unnameable something or the other only God knows what... not very convincing to me his arguments are, neither are they in tune with the actual ancient wisdom and tradition. Hehe. Little does he know indeed about it. I do like him however, what a pickle. Oh vey, anyway... i will try not to get into these sort of close to heart discussions with the uninitiated ones, it's not worth it. Oh my me. Enough said. Actually, not yet. I had to explain to one guy the difference between mother's X and father's Y chromosome, where Y carries the inherited traits in the dna, while the female x gets overwritten in a few generations. Same like when doing a computer upgrade, the home directory with personal files that are being transferred to a new system represent the Y chromosome inherited from the father's line, while the computer OS files and hardware can be replaced, metaphorically representing the X chromosome inherited from mother's line, the nature. Hence the Jewish High Priests and Kingships where traditionally patriarchal. Nowhere in Bible does it say that one's mother has to be a Jew in order to be part of the House of Israel and to be in the covenant with the Lord God of Abraham. King Solomon had many wives, a harem full, so almost if not all kings of the old, one of his famous wives was from Ethiopia if I remember correctly. The whole matriarchal mother's line custom of passing the ethnic identity has started, from what i have figured, in Khazaria, around the 7th century CE, as a way to protect the family inheritance from taxation and confiscation if otherwise it was based on the male line, who were also scarce and vulnerable to early retirement due to the frequent wars. "Astride a major artery of commerce between northern Europe and southwestern Asia, Khazaria became one of the foremost trading emporia of the medieval world, commanding the western marches of the Silk Road and played a key commercial role as a crossroad between China, the Middle East and Kievan Rus'. For some three centuries (c. 650–965) the Khazars dominated the vast area extending from the Volga-Don steppes to the eastern Crimea and the northern Caucasus. Khazaria long served as a buffer state between the Byzantine empire and both the nomads of the northern steppes and the Umayyad empire, after serving as Byzantium's proxy against the Sasanian Persian empire. The alliance was dropped around 900."*1 Then of course we have not one but several kinds of Jews, or whatever culture is used as a point of reference, three kinds that i use to categorize: the genetic, the ethnic, and the religious. Nice and Clear. The genetic is whatever the Y chromosome has brought forth from the ends of time, with a healthy up-to-date mitochondrial dna and all that important nature stuff, hooray. The ethnic is cultural, relating to traditions and customs, for example someone who is following certain cultural practices without being directly connected to that culture on inherent genetic level, a Japanese Sushi parlor in Jerusalem, where a Japanese owner is speaking Hebrew and is closed on Shabbat, however he is not genetically linked. And last but not least, the religious aspect. There are all sorts of different types of the religious denominations in Judaism, as is so too with many, if not all, other major religions. Anyone can convert to Judaism, as with most religions, by way of performing so-called "giyur" ritual, "a formal act undertaken by a non-Jewish person who wishes to be recognized as a full member of a Jewish community. A Jewish conversion is normally a series of religious acts and studies, including an expression of association with the Jewish people and, sometimes, the Land of Israel. A formal conversion is also sometimes undertaken to remove any doubt as to the Jewishness of a person who wishes to be considered a Jew. The procedure for conversion depends on the sponsoring denomination, and depends on meeting the requirements for a conversion to that religious or non-religious branch or denomination. A conversion in accordance with the process of a denomination is not a guarantee of recognition by another denomination. In some cases, a person may forgo a formal conversion to Judaism and adopt some or all beliefs and practices of Judaism. However, without a formal conversion, many highly observant Jews will reject a convert's Jewish status. There are some groups that have adopted Jewish customs and practices. For example, in Russia the Subbotniks have adopted most aspects of Judaism without formal conversion to Judaism. However, if Subbotniks, or anyone without a formal conversion, wish to marry into a traditional Jewish community or immigrate to Israel, they must have a formal conversion. A male convert to Judaism is referred to by the Hebrew word ger (Hebrew: גר, plural gerim) and a female convert is a giyoret. The word is related to the term "proselyte" which is derived from the Koine Greek Septuagint translation of the Bible. In Karaite Judaism a Ger is a non-Jew who has yet to fully convert to Judaism. After a Ger converts to Judaism, they are no longer considered a Ger but a full-fledged Jew. The word ger comes from the Hebrew verb lagur (לגור) meaning "to reside" or "to sojourn [with]". In the Hebrew Bible ger is defined as a "foreigner", or "sojourner." Rabbi Marc Angel writes: "The Hebrew ger (in post-Biblical times translated as "proselyte") literally means "resident" and refers to a non-Israelite who lived among the Israelite community. When the Torah commands compassion and equal justice for the ger, it is referring to these "residents." Rabbinic tradition interpreted the word ger as referring to proselytes..."[10] Angel's explanation of the literal meaning of "ger" as alien is borne out in biblical verses such as Lev 19:34: As a citizen among you shall be the ger (foreigner) who lives among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were gerim in the land of Egypt—I am the Lord your God."*2 Then i have explained the difference between the inherent freedoms, as in breathing, vs liberties, such as in voting, the rights which are gained upon meeting the set qualification criteria, hence the liberty power is given or gained, i.e. the Civil Code / National Charter rights, etc., while the power of freedom is universal and inalienable, which forms the basis of the UN Universal Declaration Of Human Rights. Then too there are rights of the corporate shareholders, and since most governments and jurisdictions are incorporated, the resident citizens of such municipal / provincial / federal corporations are the shareholders of it and deserve a dividend payments as are the shareholders in the international / transnational corporations. So, there. Now it's enough said. :P _________________________________________ *1 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khazars *2 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conversion_to_Judaism
