The Science of Art Friday, 22 January 2010 at 03:12 (related note: Science vs Religion) A question was posed by M.C.A!? "doesn't really know whether or not the fact that they just figured out one of their favorite artists is sampling from Ladyscraper influences the integrity of said artist's work..." Ladyscraper I am sure was sampling stuff from public domain, at least by using silence, sound, language, expressions, culture at large. If an artist was inspired by another artist to incorporate their work into their own, well, the art is in the moment of enlightenment when making art, ingredients of which are partly planned, derivative thought, and partly unplanned original thought, random chaos, together making a happening producing an incident of art, the artwork itself is a residue of such a process. For that matter, if it was indeed an art moment or a commercial craft work, artist is rewarded already by the fact of self-driven and self-satisfying experience with potential sale of an artwork itself, if it was not commissioned ahead of time already. The success of an artist in cultural Olympics in time being determined by popular resonance weight of their brand, their logo, their signature used to sign their artwork, which itself can inspire new incidents of enlightenment. Hence our leaders are leading the way and they are artists discovering existing, remembering forgotten, and creating new opportunities for the future. The conventionalists, aka scientists and archivists later come in, name, catalog, and sort everything out, researching and attributing due credits. They later gather in convention centers and museums, the artwork necropolises, and celebrate dead art and dead artists and scientists. I am an artist and a folk musician. I wrote a few songs, made few paintings, had some radio play, was a radio dj myself for a while, had some gallery exhibits, was published a few times, and I was trained in classical singing. I can play a little bit guitar and some piano, enough to accompany myself. As for the rest of instruments, I approach music as I approach art - incidentally, i.e. partly derivative and partly original, spontaneous expressions, with more refined approach and improving skills with the experience as time passes by, going beyond my own expectations. In art, unlike on skill depending science, if the outcome is already known it is not worth pursuing for artist to achieve, it is the exploration of the new ideas, new expressions, new ways to perceive what is already known that artists are after, creating and building culture while opening new opportunities and pathways expanding human horizon. Integrity of an artist/scientist is in one's heart, passionately pursuing one's love through one's art.
